Any photographer interested in cooperating with RIA Novosti has made the right decision. Large-scale image sales are more profitable than working on separate contracts, while payments for archive stock photos are a good bonus to retired photographers.
Here are the main advantages of working with RIA Novosti:
- Instead of gathering dust on the shelves, your photo archive will provide you with long-term earnings.
- The author is able to display his or her works free of charge using the prestigious RIA Novosti media platform.
- Your photos are offered for sale without any effort on your part.
- You receive additional opportunities for creative work because you do not have to market your photos every day.
- You can profit from surplus or unpaid photos.
- “Idle” photos can pay back in the future.
- Many customers prefer to deal with large photo banks rather than private individuals.
- The author has nothing to lose because his or her “idle” photos will eventually be sold.
- You get paid straight away.
Here is what you need to do:
- Upload your photos to our server.
- We choose the most popular photos in terms of subject, content, technical and professional quality, market demand, etc.
- We offer the photos to our clients.
- After selling the photos, RIA Novosti charges a commission fee and sends you the money.
- RIA Novosti will offer to buy some of the most interesting photos and will place them in its archive. They are subsequently removed from the stock photo section.
- Archive photos are the property of RIA Novosti and are stored indefinitely under a separate contract. This is a great honor, because your photos would then rank among the greatest masterpieces of photojournalism.
Any photo can be sold indefinitely, depending on its popularity, seasonal factors, correct keywords and numerous other aspects. You are entitled to royalties from every sale.
Instead of selling the photos themselves, we offer electronic photo file copies and the right to use them. Your photos containing 512 pixels on the longer side cost at least 135 rubles (over $5.5, or €3.8), while the maximum price is not limited and depends on a multitude of factors, including file size, type of publication and its circulation, sales zone, etc. Consequently, a photo may cost as much as several thousand rubles or several hundred dollars. We charge 50% commission fees.
The buyer receives non-exclusive photo use rights from the author via the visualrian.com website. RIA Novosti acts as an agent, which does not buy photo use rights from the author, who retains all proprietary and non-proprietary interests.
Register first.
- Click on the top right section of the “Authorization” link.
- You will then see the “Registration” link in the password field.
- Please provide as much personal information as possible.
- If you are ready to fulfil RIA Novosti assignments, please tick: “I am ready to take photos commissioned by RIA Novosti.” You will then be listed among our stringers, and we will contact you as soon as we require photos from your city.
- You also need to sign an agreement to send in only your own work, unless the rights have been transferred to someone else. Please download, print out, fill out, sign and mail the agreement to:

What kind of photos we prefer
RIA Novosti is a news agency, and we mostly prefer photo coverage of current events as well as photos of celebrities in an unusual setting. Photos of sports events, military conflicts, accidents, disasters and other emergencies also sell well.
We almost never accept landscape, still-life and studio photos.
Preparing your photos for publication
JPEG photos with at least 2,200 pixels and not more than 4,700 pixels on the longer side are accepted.
We require high resolution, vertical or horizontal images without any spots, dust or background noise.
Format: JPEG with at least 10-point compression.
Top-quality description is essential. The agency reserves the right to turn down your photo if it lacks proper description.

Note: The use of photo processing is not allowed except for brightness, hue and frame adjustment.
Uploading your photos to visualrian.com
After registration and authorization, you will see the “Add Photo” link leading to the new photo upload page.
Apart from sending us a ready-made file, please follow the following directions:
- Tick one or several categories matching the image content.
- Location of the event (country, region, city).
- Original (digital image, negative, slide, etc.)
- Date of the event.
- Write the object name, headline, description and keywords (separate them with the comma) in Russian or English. Professional translators will do the rest. Carefully read the instructions for describing and translating visualrian.com stock photo captions.
- Click on “Save.”
How to find out whether your photo has been sold
After the buyer chooses one of your photos and pays for it, we will notify you by e-mail and will remind you to e-mail a written agreement to us. You can download the agreement file during registration or in your personal settings.
The RIA Novosti – author agreement
The agreement is signed only once and your royalties will subsequently be transferred to your account.
All information on photos sold and royalties earned will appear in your Personal Settings.
Images of people
Photographers are required by law to request permission to publish images of people. Although we do not require photographers to send us permission statements from every model, we strongly recommend that models fill out a standard form published on this page.
